I grew up in a small New England town of about 2000 residents and this is how Memorial Day was celebrated back then. I'm sure it probably was similar in all Small Town, USA.
Late May
Each year, At Memorial Day, There would be a service held, At the Town Square.
After wards, the town folk would gather, At the bridge. The National Guard, the Legion and The High School Band.
Little boys with their little guns, Little girls waving their little flags. The veterans saluting and The widows crying.
And then, the twenty-one gun salute, And each mother, Of a dead soldier would throw a Wreath into the river.
The wreath floated away, And, Like the fallen son, Never to return.
