i just bought a Primo Oval Jr and am absolutely uncertain that I need to buy a deflector plate. Why can't I use a drip pan or something else that approximates the size of a deflector plate at a fraction of the cost. I'm new to this game and am counting on your expertise. I had a barrell and finally mastered it. I'm excited about a ceramic/kamado challenge.

Deflector plates are NOT a necessity.....you can use fire bricks, HD aluminum foil, foil pans filled with sand (or water, but I don't recommend it) or any thing that will deflect the heat.
